This is the Way… To Truly Understand Generative AI Beyond ChatGPT

If you attended Outperform 2023 with PROS, you probably heard my keynote below. I know some of you have been asking and waiting for this recording, so go right ahead! For other followers of my blog here at Quantum Simplex, maybe I can share a bit more about why and how this presentation came about.

Generative AI (GenAI) and ChatGPT are actually not new technologies. Some of the crucial machine learning (ML) techniques underpinning these technologies, such as generative adversarial network (GAN) and transformers, were invented in 2014 and 2017 respectively. And the notion of a generative model was well-establish in probabilistic modeling long before in the early 2000’s. But the serendipitous success of ChatGPT has definitely focused the world’s attention on this subject. Public awareness of GenAI and large language model (LLM) reached a critical level, and suddenly they’ve become the buzz words within the lexicon of every human language.

Too much noise

However, I’ve been a little frustrated about how people talk about GenAI in the industry. Although they do help by creating more noise around GenAI, which is not a bad thing for the industry as it forces business leaders (who are often attention-deficit) to pay attention to this emergent technology. But they are nevertheless noisy.

When I hear people talk about GenAI, they are either untrue or way over-exaggerated. To be fair, many so-called industry experts in AI legitimately don’t know what they are talking about because GenAI has been evolving so fast. But I do know quite a few scientists who do know this subject. Yet, I felt they have not represented GenAI well enough and don’t offer enough insight into this black box. So, this is my attempt to fix the problem. I will leave out much of the unnecessary technical details, but I won’t insult your intelligence by dumbing it down.

Therefore, if you watch this presentation intently, you will learn how LLM like ChatGPT works, how it’s trained, and why it works. You will understand why and how GenAI hallucinates and why that is actually a feature, not a bug. And despite the hallucinatory nature of GenAI, how can you use it in fact-based applications. Most importantly, we will talk through enough use cases that you will start to see what’s possible and what’s not. And you will know when and where guardrails are needed, and what kind of precautionary measures should be implemented to ensure the safe usage of GenAI. After all this, you should feel comfortable to begin exploring GenAI in your own work and in your organization.

Now GO and watch it… This is the way!

Beyond ChatGPT: Inside the Minds of Generative AI

Abstract: As the popularity of ChatGPT grows, it has brought the potential of generative AI to the forefront of public attention. But what is generative AI, how does it work, and why does it hallucinate? Despite its ability to generate everything from coherent dialogues, perfectly rhymed poems, award winning arts, and melodic musical tunes, is it truly intelligent? More importantly, how can businesses leverage this technology to drive innovation, productivity and growth? This keynote will address all these questions. Moreover, we will explore some of the good, the bad, and the ugly use cases of ChatGPT-liked technologies and understand why. This will empower you to leverage the vast potential of generative AI tools productively to create the greatest value. Whether you are an AI enthusiast or a business leader looking to stay ahead of the curve, this keynote promises to provide valuable insights into one of the most exciting developments in the world of AI today.
